[civsoc-mw] Democracy needs proffesional and apolitical Army and Police

We never learn.

President Alassane Dramane Ouattara of Ivory Coast has succeeded in going
for a third term.

He has launched scathing attacks on banned presidential candidates. Here is
a man the world supported and believed was a democrat when Laurent Gbagbo
was clinging to power. Hundreds of Ivorians lost their lives.

This is in contrast to Peter Mutharika who people think left Sanjika
smiling. The only difference is that the Malawi Defence Force has largely
remained professional and apolitical. Remember it required neutrality of
the army when Peter Mutharika tried to rape the constitution in 2012.

It was the army that intervened and protected demonstrators when they
exercises their right to demonstrate. The reality is, despots like Mugabe,
Gbagbo, Taylor and Ouattara rely on the army to remain in power. When the
army side with the people, the president has no choice but leave power.
That is what Mugabe realised, though very late.
