There are increasing amounts and varieties of fish and fish products being imported into South Africa targeting the diaspora living in South Africa. The products range, for example, from sun dried kapenta (from Zimbabwe and Mozambique), usipa (from Malawi) and cray fish (from Cameroon); smoked dried cat fish (from West Africa, Zambia and Malawi) and stockfish from (from Norwegian cod re-exported through Nigeria), fresh chambo (from Malawi) and bream (from Zimbabwe), and many others. In the opposite direction large amounts of canned sardine and horse mackerel (from South Africa and Namibia respectively) and Chinese farmed tilapia are being exported into the rest of Africa.

Women represent over 70% of the small-scale fish traders. Most of these operate as informal traders, and as such experience routine harassment by customs officials, traffic police, metropolitan inspectors and the bureaucracy in general. One of the main challenges is the lack of technical harmonization of fish and fish product standards and regulations governing these and also poor implementation of existing regional trade agreements.

The studies under the ‘Fish Trade Programme’ in the Southern Africa corridor aim to analyse and document: species and types of products, product forms; why regional trade is thriving; routes and means of transport being used; who the key players are; and the main challenges that traders encounter. The findings aim to provide recommendations for improved intra-regional fish trade.

This seminar will provide a snapshot of the key findings of these studies.
