In 1995, Mugabe made an unpalatable statements against homosexuals. The world accused Mugabe of homophobia. 

In 1997, Jefta Dube shot a colleague, who - according to Dube - had been taunting him. The colleague would often call Dube “Mrs Banana”. 

The shooting let the cat out of the bad 🐈. 
“A transparent bag, though!” - a Malawian smart Aleck would say loudly, interrupting my pattern of narrative. 

Anyway, the shooting put Mugabe in a very awkward position. For, it was known among powerful men in that country, that Reverend Canaan Banana was a sadist, coercive, rapist homosexual.
