60,000 people await rescue
in trees & on roofs with
only 5 helicopters

At least 60,000 people still await rescue according to O Pais this morning. The temporary air coordinator Adrian Nance says there are 10,000 in Buzi (30 km from Beira, southwest across the bay) waiting on roofs and in the football stadium. Further rain is predicted today, tomorrow and Saturday, according to the Mozambique meteorological service (INAM). Yesterday's national water bulletin predicts that flood waters will rise in the Pungue and Buzi rivers - which are causing the current flooding - and that levels are rising in the Zambezi and Save rivers. There is also flooding in Zambezia province.

University of Edinburgh researchers Ryan Casey and Sam Bowers have used radar satellite imagery which can see through clouds to map the flooding. The detailed maps show a band of flooding 100 km long from south of Buzi to northwest of Dondo and Beira.  bit.ly/MozCyclone4 and bit.ly/MozCyclone2. Their website is https://sambowers.bitbucket.io/

Yesterday there were only five helicopters doing rescue and surveys, including one from the South African air force, one from the Indian navy and others from NGOs, but they are hampered by the continuing rain. Thus rescue is mainly being done by local fishing boats in coastal areas such as Buzi. Four more helicopters are promised.

A container ship will leave from Maputo for Beira with and local people have been bringing donations to the terminal in the port. Planes and helicopters are bringing in relief materials to Beira, including tents and blankets, as rescued people and those who have lost homes come to refugee centres.

In President Nyusi's statement on 18 March, he spoke of seeing bodies floating in the water during his helicopter tour, and predicted a death toll of at least 1000. People working in the flooded areas also report many bodies, making it hard to predict the toll.

We were warned

This cyclone is highly unusual in that it formed in the Mozambique Channel off the coast of Sofala, which meant there was much less warning than usual. Nevertheless, Carta de Moçambique today points out that the national meteorological service (Instituto Nacional de Meteorologia, INAM) issued a "red alert" on 6 March saying there would be intense rains and winds, The government issued a "red alert" on 11 March. "But no one did anything" writes Carta. bit.ly/MozCyclone5 Would it have been possible to evacuate places like Buzi?
