Hello,

I would like to recommend that you, individually, or each person on his/her own, be involved in
this process to start up a chapter of the Internet Society, ISOC, in Malawi as shwon here
below.

The Internet Society is a civil society organisation that is active on Internet issues at the
international level at both the technical and community levels, https://www.internetsociety.org I
have no doubt that SDNP would support such individual active participation.

I met with Josiah at the Africa Internet Summit in Dakar in the past three weeks and we
discussed this issue. I encouraged him to work on it. As it turned out we sat next to each
other on the SA flight from Dakar to Johannesburg and he confirmed then that he would be
sending this out.

Although ISOC has often talked to me about me starting such a chapter, I have told them that I
have too many things on my plate to manage a chapter BUT that I would try to find someone
more energetic to work on it. I have found a few in the recent past but each one has not
managed to go past this stage of recruiting at least 25 eligible signatories to start such a
chapter,

Can you ?

Doing something as noble as this usually means making quite a few personal sucrifices for the
common good just like any other civil society work, like giving your time to organise, like
Josiah is doing, reading and going thorugh many documents, e-mails, etc, but it usually has
turned out to be of good value in many countries.

Please write directly to Josiah to work with him as copied here below.

Regards,

Paulos

Dear colleagues,

Thank you for expressing interest kick-start and run an ISOC chapter in
Malawi.

We need to complete these tasks:

1) Finalise a Chapter constitution in line with the ISOC bylaws templates.
Please add comments to the googledoc on the link. These are based on ISOC's
template, and after a week, I will consolidate the comments and ask that we
adopt. (These bylaws can still be amended once we get started).

edit?usp=sharing

2) Register at least 25 initial chapter members, who are should also be
members of the global Internet Society. Please register for global
membership (if you aren't an ISOC member already), and also invite others
to register (and give me their email addresses so we can add them onto the
contact list.

https://www.internetsociety.org/become-a-member/

3) Get registered as an organisation in Malawi. We should have an interim
team to handle the registration. Please volunteer if you can help with this.

Please feel free to share your thoughts on what need to be done to move
forward.

[A little about myself: I am Computer Scientist specialised in Networks /
Internet Systems, and for the past 1 year I have been working for AFRINIC
as a research engineer. From 1 July, I will be moving into an academic
position at the University of Cape Town, Computer Science Department. I am
based in Cape Town, and I am also involved with the ISOC ZA chapter, but I
am
very keen to see the Malawi ISOC chapter up and running).

Thank you and kind regards,
Josiah
