APRIL 2018 EDITION – FOCUS ON HEALTH Preventing a Monsoon Health Crisis
in Bangladesh

With more than 880,000 Rohingya refugees living in overcrowded camps in
Bangladesh, the crisis is far from over. Hundreds of thousands of these
refugees are still in need of water and sanitation support, and the
approaching monsoon season will exacerbate water-related health problems.
While there has been rapid progress to prepare for this challenge, more
must be done to ensure a safe, disease-free environment for all.

*Dear Adamson, Welcome to the April edition of *INSIGHTS

*, UNU’s monthly e-newsletter. This month we focus on health. World
Health Day (7 April), Immunization Week (24-30 April), and Malaria Day (25
April) all aim to channel global attention to this basic — yet sometimes
elusive — human right. From the yellow fever outbreak in Brazil to health
challenges facing migrants and refugees, it is clear that better solutions
are needed. In this **edition*

* you will find UNU’s latest ideas on how to confront these and other
health issues to ensure good health and well-being for all. Warm regards,
Hillary McBride UNU Head of Communications *

Mental Health of Migrants: Who's Responsible?

Among the concerns regarding migrants’ access to primary healthcare, less
attention has been given to their mental healthcare needs. States’
responsibility to provide mental healthcare to migrants — and to remove
barriers to healthcare in general — must be at the centre of migration
policy reform.

Vaccines Not a Cure-all for Infectious Diseases, But This Could Be

Struggling to control a record outbreak of yellow fever, the Brazilian
government recently launched an ambitious campaign to vaccinate nearly 40
million citizens. But mass vaccinations alone are not a realistic nor
effective response. UNU-IIGH Director Dr Pascale Allotey explores the need
for more holistic solutions to stem the spread of infectious disease in
Brazil and beyond.

Revisiting the Air Pollution Crisis in China

With more than one-third of deaths in China related to air pollution, the
government has responded by closing coal mines and shifting investment to
clean-energy innovations. This policy push will surely reduce health risks
from toxic air, but the socio-cultural impacts are less clear.

Guidance for Reducing Water-related Health Risks

Access to clean water and sanitation is a fundamental human right. Yet more
than 25% of the global population lacks access to proper toilet facilities
or uncontaminated water supplies, leading to hundreds of thousands of
unnecessary deaths annually. Learn more about UNU’s work to identify
emerging issues in the water-related health sphere.
