*TODAY IN THE HISTORY OF MALAWI: DR BANDA IS RELEASED FROM GWERU PRISON* 
On this day, the *1st April* in 1960, Dr. Banda was released from Gweru Prison in Southern Rhodesia and returned to Nyasaland. 
Upon his arrival back to Nyasaland, he immediately took over from Orton Chirwa as President of a new party called the *Malawi Congress Party* (MCP).
