Baseberi, My Lord,

What you have written down here no longer applies in the light of experience over the past five centuries. Papal Bulls are no longer sacrosanct and in retrospect have been proved to be erroneous.

Pope Nicholas V created “The Doctrine of Discovery” in 1452 in which he authorised Portuguese Christian crusades to kill non-Christians all over Africa and the west and grab their properties, land possessions. Poe Alexander VI did the same for the Spanish Christian Crusaders, this time to the far Eastern countries in 1493.

Christains killed millions of people, far more than the Muslims have ever done.

The Doctrine of Discovery is the benchmark and bedrock of all the colonisation of the hitherto non-Christian world. It authorised Christians to kill, enslave, rape, dispossess of non-Christians of the land and movable properties including minerals and other properties.

The Doctrine of Discovery is the very basis of the United Sates property Law.

King Henry VII joined the bandwagon that led to the colonisation of what is now the USA. He literally told his explorers, beginning with the Cabot family to bring back to the crown 1/5 or 20% of their plunder. When Henry the Eighth, son of Henry the Seventh took over after his father’s death and created the breakaway Anglican Church, he continued with the grab and plunder.

Now just under six centuries on, The Catholic Church and all other churches are calling on Pope Francis to revoke the Doctrine of Discovery.

Within the Catholic Church there is now a very strong pressure group called the Romero Institute which is pressing on Pope Francis to revoke the Doctrine of Discovery.

In their “ROMEROLETTER TOPOPE FRANCIS” of August 2016 here is what they are saying as a “solution”.

“The solution today is to have Pope Francis revoke the Doctrine, with the notion that the document’s framework can no longer be applicable in the modern age of science and reason. Pope francis, through his action and his words thus far, has demonstrated that he feels compelled to work towards humanitarian causes throughout his in the Vatican. As such, whereas previous popes have ignored the request to revoke the Doctrine of Discovery, we believe and continue to hope that this first Jesuit Pope can and will change that pattern. Pope Francis has deviated from several former policies that others in his office have supported, and this is a natural step into the progression to acknowledge the rights of the indigenous peoples across the world.”

The Romero letter follows from the pressure of the entire Christian world to get the doctrine revoked. Pressure mounted as from 2013, led by the following church organisations: The Episcopal Church, Unitarian Universalist Association, Christian Church, World Council of Churches, New York meeting of the Religious Society of Friends, the United Methodist Church and others.

The historical “Voyages of Discovery” were voyages of grab and plunder, rape and massacres and dispossession.

All these sanctioned by Popes Nicholas V and Alexander VI under papal bulls.

So Baseberi, do you still stick to your dictum that "What you bind on earth will be bound in heaven."

So in other words, the Doctrine of Discovery was buond in heaven through papal bulls.

I beg to differ.

Mzee.

Ba Prof Muula,

Not correct from the interpretation of the pronouncement. He did not say that he will stop any unmarried priest from getting married if they so wished and sought to have their celibacy vow re-addressed and reversed.

By this papal pronouncement, it is very clear that Canon Law was not carved in stone or cast in concrete. There were many married popes before over the centuries, including Peter, the first pope who had to get his wife killed in order to become pope. There are many cases of sexually active popes who had children out of wedlock.

Celibacy is very archaic, especially in this jet age. It was originally meant to cater for the long periods away, travelling on foot or by donkey, when the priest went ministering in far off lands at the expense of his wife’s conjugal rights. Unfortunately celibacy has contributed tremendously to the many cases of sodomy, paedophiles by catholic priests. There are so many cases still outstanding in courts of law. This has brought the very Catholicism in disrepute. However, the church is distinct from the actions of priests with a perverted mind.

The church needs re-organisation and revision of some of its illogical, unrealistic and out of touch catholic dogmas.

There is so much hope in the world for change for the better under this Jesuit Pope, the first one ever. Jesuits (priests of the ‘Society of Jesus’) are famous for radicalism and advancement.

For example, Alcuin, a Jesuit Abbot of Canterbury, was the founder of, arguably one the very first universities, University of Paris in 800 AD. Oxford was founded in 1096 by two expelled lecturers and three students, all expelled from the University of Paris.

It was a huge mistake for the Vatican to reverse Zambian Bishop Milingo’s marriage to a South Korean woman, and get him recalled to Rome. Bishop Milingo used to perform miracles and yet the Vatican stopped him.

The pope has given the lower limit without giving the upper one. You will be surprised as to how many catholic priests would join the married men bandwagon should the pope set aside the obnoxious celibacy dictum form the catholic dogma, as a requirement for priesthood, brotherhood and sisterhood. In human nature, these could be branded as nonsensical vows.

Very fortunately, in all fairness, on this net there are so many candidates of married catholic laymen and lay preachers who would take that initiative of becoming catholic priests.

Pope Francis’s move should be highly commended because it will certainly lead to some quantum leap in the growth of the church. He is a very liberal pope.

Mzee

Of course he didn't say unmarried priests could now marry but married men could become priest.

So the unmarried priests will remain unmarried while married men could then become priests.

[Sometime back, I remember saying that this first Jesuit Pope could radicalise the catholic church and Catholicism… The end result could be that celibacy would become archaic and that Catholic fathers, brothers and sisters could be free to get married and continue to serve the church through their roles.
