Subject: [Malawitalk] RE: Married Men Could Be Roman Catholic Priests.
Ba Prof Muula,
Not correct from the interpretation of the pronouncement. He did not say that he will stop any unmarried priest from getting married if they so wished and sought to have their celibacy vow re-addressed and reversed.
By this papal pronouncement, it is very clear that Canon Law was not carved in stone or cast in concrete. There were many married popes before over the centuries, including Peter, the first pope who had to get his wife killed in order to become pope. There are many cases of sexually active popes who had children out of wedlock.
Celibacy is very archaic, especially in this jet age. It was originally meant to cater for the long periods away, travelling on foot or by donkey, when the priest went ministering in far off lands at the expense of his wife’s conjugal rights. Unfortunately celibacy has contributed tremendously to the many cases of sodomy, paedophiles by catholic priests. There are so many cases still outstanding in courts of law. This has brought the very Catholicism in disrepute. However, the church is distinct from the actions of priests with a perverted mind.
The church needs re-organisation and revision of some of its illogical, unrealistic and out of touch catholic dogmas.
There is so much hope in the world for change for the better under this Jesuit Pope, the first one ever. Jesuits (priests of the ‘Society of Jesus’) are famous for radicalism and advancement.
For example, Alcuin, a Jesuit Abbot of Canterbury, was the founder of, arguably one the very first universities, University of Paris in 800 AD. Oxford was founded in 1096 by two expelled lecturers and three students, all expelled from the University of Paris.
It was a huge mistake for the Vatican to reverse Zambian Bishop Milingo’s marriage to a South Korean woman, and get him recalled to Rome. Bishop Milingo used to perform miracles and yet the Vatican stopped him.
The pope has given the lower limit without giving the upper one. You will be surprised as to how many catholic priests would join the married men bandwagon should the pope set aside the obnoxious celibacy dictum form the catholic dogma, as a requirement for priesthood, brotherhood and sisterhood. In human nature, these could be branded as nonsensical vows.
Very fortunately, in all fairness, on this net there are so many candidates of married catholic laymen and lay preachers who would take that initiative of becoming catholic priests.
Pope Francis’s move should be highly commended because it will certainly lead to some quantum leap in the growth of the church. He is a very liberal pope.

Of course he didn't say unmarried priests could now marry but married men could become priest.
So the unmarried priests will remain unmarried while married men could then become priests.

[Sometime back, I remember saying that this first Jesuit Pope could radicalise the catholic church and Catholicism… The end result could be that celibacy would become archaic and that Catholic fathers, brothers and sisters could be free to get married and continue to serve the church through their roles. There is nothing stronger than the sex force in human affairs. Mzee.]
